About Us
Welcome to the Alternative Center for Education (ACE), a non-profit organization based in Appleton, Wisconsin, dedicated to "serving those who learn differently." Our mission is to provide comprehensive educational services to individuals with learning disabilities and differences, equipping them with the academic, social, and emotional skills needed to succeed. We envision a community where all talents are celebrated and where those with learning differences are recognized and respected for their unique contributions.

Director
Anne Schauman holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Psychology (EdD) and brings over 30 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with learning differences and related conditions. She conducts thorough diagnostic evaluations and provides tailored treatment services to individuals of all ages. Anne has extensive experience with clients facing learning disorders such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia; cognitive disabilities; traumatic brain injuries; autism spectrum disorders; and ADHD. Her unwavering dedication inspires all clients to reach their full potential.

Independent Contractor
Maggie Van Der Horst is an Advanced Practice Social Worker. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Maggie works with adolescents and adults for the Alternative Center for Education as a soft skills instructor. Soft skills are described as abilities, traits, and behaviors that support effective collaboration with others. Common examples of soft skills include verbal and nonverbal communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, teamwork, stress management, and adaptability, among others. Maggie works closely with clients who are interested in developing soft skill expertise for proficiency in the workplace. As a soft skills instructor, Maggie strives to meet all participants where they are at in developing soft skills for workplace success.
